Hello Anonymous Grade 10 student!

I will be guiding you on how to answer the following question. Remember, this is based on the Life Orientation Grade 10 Source-Based Task (2025 Term 1), and all answers come from the Focus Grade 10 Life Orientation textbook.

Define the term “democratic participation” and indicate why it is important.

According to the Focus Grade 10 Life Orientation textbook, democratic participation refers to the right and responsibility of individuals to take part in decisions that affect their lives. This includes being involved in governance, policymaking, and service delivery, as supported by South Africa’s Constitution.

Democratic participation is important because:

  1. It prevents abuse of power by ensuring that leaders remain accountable.
  2. It ensures public needs are considered when decisions are made.
  3. It helps inform government about what citizens require.
  4. It leads to effective service delivery and ensures that public concerns are addressed.

By participating in activities such as voting, attending meetings, protesting, and signing petitions, citizens help shape the way their country is governed.
