C: Firm, sure of yourself, clear about what you need and want to communicate.
An assertive person states their needs and opinions clearly and confidently while still respecting others.
Two ways in which self-awareness improves performance at school are:
- It encourages learners to focus on their strengths and avoid things that distract them from their goals.
- It motivates learners to work on their weaknesses and turn them into strengths so that they can prevent problems.
B: Means how much you like yourself and how successful you think you are.
Self-esteem is the value you place on yourself, so it describes how much you like yourself and how capable you feel.
Educators can encourage learners to keep a personal journal, because writing about their experiences helps them reflect on their feelings, strengths and areas they need to improve.
The importance of acknowledging and respecting the uniqueness of others can be discussed as follows:
- Individual abilities: Everyone has different talents and strengths, for example some people are good at sport while others excel in music or Maths. When we respect these differences, people feel valued and confident to develop their abilities instead of being compared or mocked. It also allows a group to benefit from everyone's strengths and supports learners with disabilities to take part fully.
- Personal preferences: People differ in what they like, such as their choice of clothes, music, food, friends or religion. Respecting these choices shows that we accept their right to be themselves and upholds their right to dignity and freedom of expression. This reduces bullying, prejudice and conflict and builds tolerant, healthy relationships.
A: the way in which individuals perceive themselves in terms of their abilities, limitations and strengths.
Self-esteem is about how you see and value yourself, including how good you think you are at things. Option B describes how other people feel about you, which is not self-esteem. (The printed memo gives B, but A is the only option that describes a person's view of themselves.)
