Three diseases that can affect the community because of the unhealthy environment are:
- Cholera.
- Diarrhoea (gastroenteritis).
- Typhoid.
One social responsibility of municipalities is to run intervention programmes and campaigns that deal with social problems such as substance abuse and gender-based violence. When public funds are lost through fraud and corruption, there is less money for these social services, so social problems are not dealt with and poor communities become even more disadvantaged.
Two possible reasons why some people do not want to engage in intervention campaigns in their communities are:
- Some people think the problems do not affect them directly, so they feel there is no need for them to help find solutions.
- Others feel that because they pay rates and taxes, it is the government's job to fix the problems, so they refuse to give up their own time.
A: purchase products that require minimal packaging where possible.
Buying products with less packaging reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills and the environment. Options B, C and D all add to plastic pollution.
Two health risks that might affect safe and healthy living in areas with severe water restrictions are:
- People may drink untreated water from rivers or dams, believing it is clean, and then get sick from bacteria in the water.
- Without enough water for proper sanitation and handwashing, diseases such as cholera, which spreads through faeces, can break out in the community.
Three possible practices within local government structures that may negatively affect service delivery to communities are:
- Officials demand bribes or kickbacks before services are delivered.
- Tenders are awarded corruptly to family or friends who lack the skills to do the work.
- Unqualified or incompetent officials are appointed to key positions.
