State reasons why citizens of a country should take part in elections as a civic duty.
According to the Focus Grade 10 Life Orientation textbook, participating in elections is an important civic duty because:

  1. It ensures representation in government – By voting, citizens help elect political parties and representatives who will make decisions on their behalf.
  2. It strengthens democracy – Elections give people a voice in decision-making and prevent power from being concentrated in the hands of a few.
  3. It holds leaders accountable – When citizens vote, they choose leaders based on their promises and can vote them out if they fail to deliver.
  4. It influences policies and laws – The party or candidates elected into power determine the direction of policies, laws, and service delivery.
  5. It allows participation at different levels – Citizens vote in national, provincial, municipal, and community elections, ensuring that their concerns are heard at all levels of governance.

By voting in elections every five years, citizens play an active role in shaping the future of their country and ensuring that their rights and interests are protected.
